On 12th – 16th of July in Krakow Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry PAS and Faculty of Chemistry, Jagiellonian University organized ProtXRD workshops for young crystallographers.
Workshops were dedicated to undergrads, Ph.D. students and research staff who wanted to learn the basics as well as a little more detailed knowledge in the area of in protein X-ray diffraction methods. The lectures started with a broad explanation of the fundamentals of crystallography moving to more advanced topics. Workshops covered such areas as data collection and its quality estimation, structure solving by various approaches and model building and validation.
Our staff was happily involved in the workshops and lectures. Dr. Sebastian Glatt gave a lecture titled: “Large Molecular complex – at the interface between X-ray and Cryo-EM”. Dr. Przemysław Grudnik led a workshop on structure refinement with phenix.refine / coot. On the last day, Dr. Grudnik presented Structural Biology Core Facility capability and presented our offer to all potential, future users. Dr. Piotr Wilk jointly with Dr. Manfred Weiss and Dr. Piotr Małecki led practicals on the data processing and structure refinement. On the last day, Dr. Wilk held a lecture about “Radiation Damage in Protein Crystallography”. The participants of the workshop had also an opportunity to visit the newest Polish synchrotron facility SOLARIS.
Last but not least, one of our top users – mgr Elżbieta Wątor – won a poster prize during workshops. Congratulations to Ela!
And of course many thanks to the organizers of the ProtXRD workshop!
